After graduating from the University of Queensland, Catherine Milligan continued cello studies in Europe. With an Italian Government scholarship she undertook post-graduate performance studies in Italy with Franco Rossi (Florence) and Andre Navarra (Siena Academy), and with a Royal College of Music scholarship she studied with Christopher Bunting in London, and in European masterclasses with Pierre Fournier, Janos Starker, & the Amadeus Quartet.
Based in London for many years, Catherine performed extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician, and played with various leading European orchestras. She has also played with the Queensland Symphony. Her recordings for the ABC include string music from various periods, music for solo cello and contemporary Australian repertoire.
Catherine is in demand as a teacher. In 1992 Catherine returned to Australia as Lecturer in Cello at the Newcastle University Conservatorium and later also became Head of the Junior Department. In both Australia and Europe, she has taught all age groups and to all levels in schools and colleges, and has conducted and tutored numerous youth orchestras. Now based in Brisbane Catherine combines teaching and performing, examines for the A.M.E.B., and continues her research into string pedagogy. She has been very active in the Australian Strings Association (AUSTA) as Editor of the National Journal STRINGENDO, and a national and state committee member.
